A Lifetime Dedicated to Pediatric Health Care

With strong community ties and a passion for helping others, Loretta Hicks has spent over 30 years dedicating her personal and professional life to Pediatric Nursing. Loretta is a Central California native who received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1979 from California State University, Sacramento. She immediately began her RN career in the Obstetrics High Risk Perinatal Unit at Sutter Memorial Hospital. Loretta and her husband, Doug Hicks, returned to Fresno, where she began an RN position at Children’s Hospital Central California (CHCC) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and later joined the Medical Transport Team.

Over the course of 15 years at CHCC, Loretta’s personal and professional life grew; she celebrated the addition of daughter, Katelyn, and struggled through the complicated, dangerous pregnancy and premature births of twin sons Kyle and Garrett. In 1993 Loretta graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Master of Science in Nursing – Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She taught part time in Obstetrics and Pediatrics for the Department of Nursing at Fresno State from 1991-1995 and received her Post-Masters Family Nurse Practitioner in 1995. In 1996, Loretta declined an opportunity to teach Obstetrics and Pediatrics full time for the Department of Nursing at Fresno State and chose to use her Health Services Credential to work as a School Nurse for Madera Unified School District.  This was a pivotal career change where she first realized the impact of children with medical needs and developmental disabilities in the school setting. More importantly she saw the stress of their care on parents, siblings and the family; that the challenges of their care did not end at their discharge from the NICU or PICU, but continued day in and day out, across medical, educational, and therapeutic services for the duration of their childhood and longer.

Loretta dreamed of a place where a child’s medical needs could be easily met as an integrated plan between parents and service providers. This dream came to fruition with the inspiration and encouragement of her husband, children, her best friend and peer Jennifer Hughes, MSN, RN/PNP - Owner of Ridgeline Pediatric Center in Grass Valley and Loretta’s business partner Bryon Baker-Owner of Caring Corner in Bakersfield.

Loretta’s Little Miracles opened in 2009, a dream which grew from a 6-bed home based care, to a Pediatric Day Health Care facility (PDHC). As a PDHC, Loretta’s “home away from home” provides daytime and weekend nursing care in a social and active daycare for up to hundreds of local children with medical needs on a weekly basis.  As Owner and Director of Nursing, Loretta leads a talented staff of skilled nurses and care professionals. Loretta’s love, kindness, and focus towards medical, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being, helps children and their families reach their personal potential, overcome obstacles, and receive optimum nursing care through such a unique and essential service.

There may be no place like home but there is no Daycare like Loretta’s."

Doug Hicks - Owner and Administrator
Doug Hicks has been married to Loretta since 1978 and takes great pride in the three successful children they have together. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of California Davis in 1980 and has enjoyed a long standing and impressive career in fire service. Starting out as a volunteer firefighter in 1974, he went on to hold the rank of Division Chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). In his career, Doug has had the honor of serving as an Operations Chief, Air Operations Director, and as a Deputy Incident Commander. In addition to helping manage the State's largest emergency incidents as part of one of the Type I incident management teams, Doug has maintained a current Emergency Medical Technician Certificate since 1976.

Not only does Doug posess the integrity and honor that a commanding position in fire service requires, he is continually educating himself and those around him. During typical day to day fire service experience, emergency medical services are the highest percentage of responses. Doug has also been part of the fire ambulance team serving on first responder fire engines. Retiring after twenty-eight years with CalFire, he is currently serving as the Battalion Chief for the Tulare County Fire Department.

With a lengthy and impressive career serving those in need Doug dedicates his off-duty time to the administration and operations of Loretta's Little Miracles to provide the best care available to your medically fragile child, you, and your family.
